Description

Coppa Amber 12 in. x 12 in. x 4 mm Glass Mosaic Tile - Product information

This Merola Tile Coppa Amber 12 in. x 12 in. x 4 mm Glass Mosaic Tile features a special fusing process which creates the look of mineral veining in each piece in random patterns with gold and copper striations running through amber and brown. A white thinset and grout is recommended so as not to detract from the rich colors. The thinset will also blend in with the mesh backing making it less noticeable. With the mesh backing, the tile is easily installed in most areas of the home and outdoors to suit your design preferences.

  • 1 square foot per piece, each piece sold individually. Piece weight equals 1.5 lbs.
  • Grade 1, first-quality glass tile for wall use
  • 12 in. width x 12 in. length x 4 mm thick mesh-mounted mosaic. 3/4 in. W x 3/4 in. L square pieces
  • Unglazed slightly textured finish with a high sheen and slight variation in tone
  • P.E.I. Rating 0 is suitable for walls and residential use only
  • Impervious flooring has water absorption of less than 0.5% for indoor and outdoor use and is frost resistant
  • Wall tiles are not C.O.F. rated

The effort to install these great-looking tiles was worth it as long as you avoid a few potential installation problems.
Last month my wife and I decided to install a backsplash in our new home's kitchen. We ordered the Merola tiles online (which arrived, by the way, in perfect condition, at our doorstep in two days).
The tiles' instructions came with a reference site for installation via The Tile Council of North America. Navigating through the site proved to be difficult; so, I relied on a "This Old House" tutorial (outstanding step-by-step instructions) to learn how to properly install glass mosaic tiles since this was my first time working with the materials.
What I've learned from installing the tiles I would like to pass on to future potential buyers of this product:
1. Cover every square inch of the workspace with some sort of material such as cardboard as you will make a mess with the grout and adhesive. Blue Tape works very well in masking off all areas.
2.If you want to appreciate the translucence of this product, you must use white adhesive.
3. Use a non-sand adhesive if you're going over existing drywall, especially. Home Depot sells the proper adhesive for the job that also comes with great instructions on use.
4. Here is the MAIN procedure you must adhere (pun intended) to in order to save yourself a lot of frustration while installing these tiles...Use just enough thinset that you can work with the tiles in your particular application within a 30 minute time frame. The adhesive WILL set up and make adjustments to the tiles much more difficult. Also, ensure, you have properly dry-laid all of the tiles, WITH the necessary cuts mad before you install the product. Since the tiles are small and the mesh backing is on the flimsy side, you will have to make adjustments to get level and plumb lines. To achieve level and plumb grout lines, I would highly recommend using strips of wood to "rack" the tiles in place in the grout lines. Also, a tip from the TOH instructions proved to be invaluable: Space the joint between each 12-inch tile closer than your eye would want you to in order to avoid seeing gaps between each tile. Trust me, you'll want to make the tiles look as if they are seamless as it makes for a much better overall appearance (see attached photo).
5. Cutting the tiles is another tricky thing. They are extremely brittle. Using the recommended glass-tile cutter is a learning curve. The best way I found to cut the tiles by hand is to not cut them unless it's absolutely necessary. Even with all of the cutouts I had for outlets and switches, the tiles were small enough to just simply make cuts to the mesh backing to the correct dimensions of the outlets. (Note: grinding the tiles, I've heard, is an alternative to the tile nippers, but the glass dust seems as if it could be a safety issue).
6. Grouting is fairly routine. Cleanup, per the grout manufacturer's instructions, is a breeze since the glass tiles are slick as, well, glass.
7. Otherwise, first-time installers, follow instructions you trust and run with those procedures.
*What I would recommend to the manufacturer:
-Use a stronger mesh backing.
-Provide a better set of instructions or a referring website that mentions the potential installation issues with this particular product.
For the money and the results, the hassle to install these economically-priced tiles was worth the effort. We've already received a lot of compliments on the tiles from friends and family.

If you are looking to add a little pop to an area, this is a nice product.
Great value. Great look.
Was generally pretty easy to install. Went over some pretty uneven brick, so used cement board underlays both glued and masonry screws directly to the brick. Floated and then laid the tiles.
With the smaller tiles, have extra grout available.
The entire room is a testament to Home Depot DIYer. The accent lights, venetian plaster, molding, paints, trims, wiring, underlays. Thx HD.
