Great-looking stone tile
When I went to my local HD store to collect my order, I was quite surprised to see how many boxes were needed to contain the tiles. When I opened the boxes, I understood why. The tiles were surrounded by a great deal of packaging to prevent damage in transit. Even so, one tile was damaged. I don't see this as a big drawback—the package was supposed to contain 13.5 sq ft. of tiles, but to my eye (I didn't measure) it seemed quite a bit more. The tiles come in five groups of 7, with tiles in each group arranged as shown in HD's picture. A light plastic backing holds the tiles in a group together, for ease of laying them out and arranging them, and, I suppose, for ease in grouting between them if that's what you want. I'm using them for a garden path, so I opted to cut the plastic and place them in a more widely spaced pattern, but that was also straightforward. The tiles were mostly grey, but still quite attractive.
Altogether, I'm quite pleased with them. I didn't want a pattern of square or rectangular tiles, and this is a great alternative.

Came broken in the boken in several places. However, it worked for our needs. We had a contractor installing updated tile flooring and it was on the fireplace face as well. He was able to wet saw cut the pieces in half and make it work, used the broken pieces for smaller areas that needed something. Had to get special mortar to adhere it to the cement board he installed. THen used nails to hold the mess backing in place overnight, by morning he was able to grout it with the same Prism grout we used on the floor (sable brown) and tada! All done. Looks amazing. Over not as bright as photo, but still pretty. Had a realtor in to price home and she LOVED it. Very rich looking. I have not seen flaking, but we do not walk on it. Has held up to heat for a month now from fireplace. Hoping it lasts. I would recommend this tile.

Looks beautiful...This product looks great if you are willing to forgive the stone's natural flaking and there will be some "rust" released once installed.
I have read conflicting things on whether one should seal slate or not. So far, we have not sealed it. I love the way our entrance walkway looks now.

There are 7 segments attached to a mesh and it’s almost impossible to lift the entire tile and place it on the adhesive without making a major mess. We decided to separate the segments from the mesh and worked the pattern with individual segments. It reminded me of working on a jigsaw puzzle. It was time consuming but we had better control of both the segments and the gaps between them and because of that we ultimately used 3 boxes less. On the flipside, we needed a lot of grout. 7 large bags of it and the cleanup was long and tedious. I should also mention that the tiles are packed 5 per box and a lot of the individual segments on the mesh were cracked or broken. Since we were separating the segments from the mesh, we just used the broken segments for edging but it was upsetting to see in some cases all 5 tiles having at least one segment broken. Out of 12 boxes that we used up there was not one box that did not have broken segments. Also, the tiles are not flat so you have to be creative how you lay them. The stone is fragile but hard to cut. I would not use this product indoors. You’d never be able to have a clean floor because the surface is uneven. I am giving it 4 stars because I like the final result but it was hard to install. Probably, not exactly a DYI material.

looks nice when it's done, but these stones were saw cut, not honed as the previous purchase. We needed one more set of stones to complete our project, but these stones were thicker than the previous ones, which causes a major difficulty attaining a uniform surface when some stones are already in place. Also, all previous stones were honed, these were simply cut. Fortunately we didn't need very many and therefore it didn't significantly affect the overall appearance. However, at the price we paid (same as honed), this was a disappointment. Since the stone were shipped in boxes of two sections each, why is it necessary to purchase 5 sections as a minimum???? Lastly, the coloration of the stone that we received was primarily gray, not as appealing as the previous stones. Please review the new supplier, if you have switched them; Home Depot is not receiving a "like product" but the retail remains the same. Not happy, but made due.
