Peacock 16 in. x 16 in. Gauged Slate Floor and Wall Tile (8.9 sq. ft. / case) - Product information

Stylish and sophisticated with a textured finish, this Peacock Gauged Slate Tile will add some vibrancy to your design aesthetic. The 16 in. x 16 in. floor and wall tile from MSI has a range of peacock-like colors with a random variation in tone to help brighten your space. It performs amazingly as flooring in kitchens and bathrooms and can also be used to upgrade an accent wall, countertop, shower wall, fireplace facade or backsplash. This gauged slate tile is certified by the Marble Institute of America and is suitable for exterior applications in locales that do not experience sub-freezing temperatures. NOTE: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. After installation, vendor disclaims any liabilities.

My recommendation is based on the fact I had installed this tile years ago and need a source for replacement . The case packaging for these tiles is impressive and does a good job of eliminating the typical digs and chips I use to encounter when i purchased these times in a bulk pallet. The bad news is they still crack or fracture in this very well insulated enclosure. I encountered ~ 30% damage per case. the good news is I could use 1/2 of those damages in areas requiring a cut tile. As a rule, I would be very cautious of slate tile in outdoor areas that are wet or exposed to freezing temperatures. They continuously fracture layers of material due to wear and tear and eventually need to be replaced. Sealing is important to minimize tile damage from moisture or freezing which fractures the tile from beneath.

Disappointing Purchase
The tile thickness varied form tile to tile substantially; many pieces had layers break off to make tile even thinner; some pieces crumbled in the cutting process. Tiles are not uniformly 12x12. Many of the tile surfaces have a pitted texture, so I am curious (and admittedly dubious) as to how well it will hold up over time, and whether or not it will be easy to clean.
I purchased 12x12 slate tile from HD several years ago and loved it- thought this would be similar quality, but was sorely disappointed.
Color tones were much more exclusively purple/red than I expected, and overall a fairly dark color. I had hoped for a little more variety in the color palette. It was hard to determine color form the HD photo, and since no store carries it, I found it on the manufacturer's web site. That photo was a little better (4 tiles instead of 1), but still hard to figure out what end product variety would be.
I realize this is an inexpensive tile so you might excuse the quality, but I think it's simply a poor product.

Material is very rough
Based on previous reviews, I ordered 20 pieces (4 boxes) online, giving me two more than I needed for a fireplace hearth. When the tile arrived, four of the tiles were broken, one into many pieces, but 3 extra tiles had been delivered, presumably to compensate for broken ones.
Most of the tiles were very "natural" - by which I mean rough and flaking. They ranged in thickness from 1/4" to 1/2" between tiles (and sometimes even on the same tile), making a smooth, flat surface across tiles almost impossible. In addition, drilling or scoring marks of some sort were not only on the backs of tiles, but sometimes on both sides, making them unacceptable for installation. Only about 3 of the 23 tiles I received resembled the pictured product.
If you are looking for really natural rough slate, this is probably a good deal. If you want high-quality slate with a nice surface for flooring or decorative use, this is not the slate to order. I returned the 23 slate tiles to my local Home Depot for a full refund.

I needed 30 sq. ft. to finish a job that was using another manufacturers slate. The color and texture of this matched pretty well with the original slate. Unfortunately well over half of the pieces showed delamination and or breakage. I gave them the 'ring' test by supporting a single tile on three fingers and rapping a knuckle on the center of the tile. A slight ring indicates few if any delaminations. A 'thud' indicates critical delamination. My original tile had about 10% thuds, these were over half. Some of the slate could be used for small filler pieces, but I still had way too much waste.

I chose these tiles for the kitchen floor of a renovation of a 1919 house . It was the worst material choice I have made on the entire project. I have done several tile installations and never have I encountered the problems as I did with these tiles. I very well may end up taking them out . Week plus worth of work , 500 dollars in material cost, all for naught.

1. I ordered 5 boxes of 10 each. Without exception 4 out of 10 of each box were broken.
2. The colors are just not close. Many were plain dark grey which if I wanted plain dark grey I would have ordered plain dark grey.
3. I went into this knowing slate is not easy to handle or lay but the thickness of some of the tiles was so thin as to make them useless.

We put this on our porches and were very pleased. As others have said, there was a lot of variation in color, texture, and thickness, but we were not so worried about this for the porches. We put cement board over the wooden decking first. We did not grout the tile. My husband is pretty handy!

Slate was received very carefully packaged. 5 pieces per box of the 35 pieces received only 2 were cracked, far below the normal 10 percent loss anticipated. Installed on front porch over a concrete pad. Picture included.
