Rainbow Teakwood 12 in. x 12 in. Gauged Sandstone Floor and Wall Tile (10 sq. ft. / case) - Product information

MSI Rainbow Teakwood 16 in. x 16 in. Gauged Field Tile is an exotic Natural Stone Sandstone with rainbow colored streaks. With a large selection of sizes and accessories to choose from, this tile can easily be laid in a pattern or single layout and is suitable for residential and commercial installations, including kitchens and bathrooms. Note: Inspect all tiles before installation. Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in color, shade, finish, etc. It is recommended to blend tiles from different boxes when installing. Natural stones may be characterized by dry seams and pits that are often filled. The filling can work its way out and it may be necessary to refill these voids as part of a normal maintenance procedure. All natural stone products should be sealed with a penetrating sealer. After installation, vendor disclaims any liabilities.

I ordered 20, (2 boxes), of the tile. From the twenty tiles, 8 were broken in half. 2 tiles had big chips broken off a corner. I am extremely disappointed in Home Depot and will not order tile from you again event though I have tile jobs to do in the future.

Beautiful Tile, Hard to work with...
We bought this tile to renovate our second bathroom. In our delivery, there were more broken tiles than I expected, though we had enough to complete the job. A lot of the tiles had nicked corners. We had to make a lot of cuts so that didn't matter, but if you have a large area in which you need a lot of full tiles, you may be miffed with how many are broken. This could have been the delivery, but for our order, there were more than I normally would find acceptable.
As far as the tile goes, it is very beautiful, not a lot of boring looking tiles. I have ordered a lot of MS International tiles, and have been only somewhat impressed by the quality and color of the tiles. The majority of these tiles were very nice, with a lot of interesting colors. However, these tiles were VERY difficult to work with, because they are incredibly porous. We had to use epoxy grout and a latex thinset to minimize the amount of water that could be absorbed. These tiles will absorb any water or liquid that comes in contact with them. You MUST seal the tiles with at least two coats of sealer prior to grouting. If you don't, the color of the grout will stain the tile and you will not be able to get it out.
The finished product was worth the effort, but it sure was a lot of effort...

Don't order tiles online
This was the fourth set of tiles I've ordered through Home Depot. The first time I ordered Verde Amazonia in a few different sizes to see if I liked it since it has a lot of variation. I received my box of 10 12" tiles and they were a beautiful, polished dark green marble. I made a larger order, enough for my project. The tiles were from a different distributor a different thickness than the first order and not as highly polished. My second order (between the two marble orders) was of the Rainbow Teak. Again a beautiful tile. I didn't realize until I was ready to install that one of the boxes was 1/2" thick tiles while the other boxes were 0.4" thick tiles. I expanded that project so I needed additional tiles. These were poorly packaged and arrived significantly damaged. The rainbow teak sandstone is very nice, but I won't again order tiles online again from Home Depot since the controls on inventory, packaging and shipping seem to be severely lacking.

The tile looks great after cleanup.
The 150 SF of tile was shipped in 15 separate pieces wrapped in light card-board. The inside of the wrappers were covered with a black material which then was transferred to the edges and surfaces of the outside 2 tiles. I had to clean the material off each tile. The tile that I could not clean totally I installed with that face down. As the black material was on the inside of the wrapper, it most likely came from the factory in India. Obviously no quality control at the factory. The wrapper was held in place with carbon steel stables, which rusted of course and stained the tiles in some locations. It's almost impossible to remove this stain and so these tiles also had to be installed with the stain facing down.

Beautiful but OUCH!
Summary: a beautiful stone with substandard quality at a great price.
Most of the stone is beautiful. Some of it - from 5 to 20% is just plain ugly.
First major problem is that it is NOT 12" x 12". It seems to vary from 11 1/2" to 11 7/8 inches and it is NOT square.
Second major problem: the thickness is not consistent. Some of the pieces differ by as much as 3/16 of an inch, which really shows up.
Third problem: some pieces are "gouged" by either a dull saw or saw misalignment. Combine the numbers with the "ugly" pieces for a total of 5 to 20%,
If you have a square area that depends on consistent measurements and thickness, you may have to cut many individual pieces - or pick another tile. For my job (small areas of backsplash) it was OK.
Be careful, it's sandstone - it will break or chip easily.
Don't get ANY thinset on the tiles; it will permanently absorb it. After initial install, add stone sealer and then grout.

Fine Sandstone Tile
You'll Love this tile. Sandstone is porous so be sure to
seal tile before you grout or it will stain tile. Would have
gave this 5 stars but shipping is costly on a small order.
On a $250.00 order or more they offered free shipping.
Also, order extra for waste and matching of tile. Great Tile.

rainbow teakwook sandstone tile
I ordered 60 sq ft. of this tile for the floor of a bathroom remodel. It was delivered to the store with no shipping expense. The tile was packaged in an excellent manner with styrofoam protecting each box of tile within another box. some tile was dirty and a few stained but only three tile had chips on a corner. By careful matching and triming the flaws, I used all tile with no discardes. WARNING! This tile is very porous. I sealed all with miracle porous plus prior to instalation. Used CBP thinset white for granite and wiped in pre-mixed grout then reseal with mira matte. It goes perfect with cedar on walls and granite shower. I would suggest this product for anyone willing to invest the extra labor required for a truely unique floor.
